The Glendale Church of the Nazarene was organized in 1920 by Evangelist W.H. Nerry and 18 charter members. For the first few weeks, services were held in a large tent on West Glendale Avenue but then moved to an old building at the corner of North Central and Glenn Drive.
During the pastorate of L.T. Wells, a building at the NE corner of 61st Avenue and Glendale was purchased and within a year the church edifice was erected. E.C. Keyes served as designer and director of construction. |

In 1922, Pastor Melza Brown and the Glendale Church hosted the 2nd Arizona District Assembly. E.G. Roberts was the District Superintendent and J.W. Goodwin, General Superintendent. Glendale Church also hosted District Assemblies in 1931, 1943 and 1944.
Prior to the 25th Anniversary Celebration in 1945, many improvements were completed on the facilities. The most important of these was enlarging the building. |

Two early events stand out in our history between 1945 and 1970:
1958 - the beginning of a program to build a new facility under Rev. Floyd Smith. 1962 - the relocation of the church to 7702 North 59th Lane under Rev. Hugh Russell.
Sunday, February 15, 1970, Glendale Nazarene Church turned 50 years old. According to the Glendale Gazette, Dr. M.L. Mann was the featured speaker at the 10:45am service with dinner in the Fellowship Hall afterwards. Other guests that day included Rev. Glenn Roberson, Rev. Paul MacLearn and Evangelist Forrest McCullough. |
 |
Rev. Clyde Rhone was pastor in 1974 when the sanctuary on 59th Lane was built with a seating capacity of 451.
In 1980 Rev. Jerry Ferguson presided over the 60th Anniversary Celebration. In an article written for the occasion, Rev. Ferguson tied the experiences of the past to what lay ahead - we were on that threshold of becoming a large church. "With God's leadership as LORD, we will succeed." |
 |
On September 20, 1987, Rev. Hylyard and Janice Irvin came to shepherd the flock at Glendale Church. Under their leadership, we have learned to trust in the Lord and experience His joy.
In 1991, we expanded to three morning services with an average attendance of 745. Our Evening Service at 6:00pm had grown to an average of 441. The capacity of the Sanctuary was 451. |
 |
In 1992, we purchased the forty acre property on the corner of Cactus and 59th Avenue. And here we are . . . 12 years later . . . we have crossed the Jordan River. Our new facility is just the first phase of a multi-building complex. The new Sanctuary has seating for 908.
The Lord has used Glendale Nazarene Church over these eighty-some years. We pray that He will continue His leadership and miracles as we reach out to the community in which we live in and serve. |
